Testing if this works… « Sathfilms

this pingback should work. So, like Adrian said, the pingbacks for RMIT-blogs wouldn’t work because of the firewall set up on RMIT servers. Other than that there shouldnt be too much of a problem with regards to tracking back of other blogs.

Stuffs to get done this week:

  • the 1,000 word on top of past week’s 1,000.
  • Comm Rev readings.
  • Refine abstract again.
  • Define research direction.
  • Set up fourpointfive mailing list.
  • Comm Rev final essay – figuring out of my topic, and think hard about it. possibly come up with a skeleton.
  • Shoot the Transient spaces documentary.

- with tasks getting gradually more defined and more real, it also means that deadlines are coming closer. June doesnt seem that far away anymore and I’ve been in melbourne for about 2 months-ish now.

The cultures portrayed in Asian films faces the possibility of losing certain cultural narratives when the big Hollywood studios buy the rights to and do actually remake these movies.

The filmmakers content with the use cross-cultural representation of similar messages via the replacement of cultural symbols rooted in the original culture with replacement symbols that are relevant to the cultural background of the intended audience. However, in the filmmaker’s efforts seeking the most relevant substitutions, there remains a gap from which added meanings are gained, and some meanings from the original are lost.

This thesis proposes to, via Martin Scorsese’s award-winning The Departed and the original film it was made from – Infernal Affairs, examine the negotiation of representations between the difference in cultural backgrounds of the films by looking at the different traits of the different intended audience and the choice of symbolisms used in encoding similar messages and how these messages can never be identical to the original.

The thesis hopes to examine how the translation of the Hong Kong triad culture to an Irish American culture is taking place as Scorsese looks to remake Infernal Affairs; while addressing the issue regarding the growing trend of Hollywood studios bringing in scripts and stories from the Hong Kong cinema while attempting to localise the foreign stories, with changes to the cultural symbols of aforementioned culture to those that tend to be more widely and easily decoded.

- I know there’s still something not good about this. hmmmm… must… tweak…

spurred on by everybody’s suddenly flurry of entries. Just realised I haven’t yet put anything up in the past 9-10 days. So here it goes.

I have:

  • Updated my abstract once.
  • Finished my comm rev essay, which is excellent (not the quality of work, but the idea of it being over and done with)
  • gone to the Great Ocean Road, edited pictures and popped them up on flickr. you can view them here . (do drop a comment or two, if you think they’re nice or if they suck :) )
  • gotten a few books to get a better grasp of the issues i might face in writing the thesis.
  • picked up an envelope with my name on it, stuck on the wall outside the office in Blk 4 lvl 2. apparently it’s been there for days.
  • turned 23, celebrated my birthday (thanks sarah and arnie!)
  • spent alot of money in these 9-10 days.
  • been wishing some genie will grant me a car (or rather, a lot of money so I can buy a car, and more (Kris – Signs of being lazy, 2007, pp.97236892)).
  • thought about comm rev final essay.
  • seen the largest plate of pasta I’ve ever seen(or will ever see) in my entire life. Tried finishing it and ended up taking 1/2 a kg of it home.
  • started a flickr account and used up half my monthly quota in a day.

However, I haven’t:

  • collected the working visa from the immigrations office, it’s been close to 3 weeks.
  • started with the 5000. Procrastination of the highest quality – by telling myself i need to first get the abstract right.
  • revised my abstract again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again.
  • read the readings for comms rev next week.
  • read the library books that I’ve borrowed.
  • started on ‘The Great Gatsby’ that I bought 2 weeks back.
  • re-watched ‘Infernal Affairs’ (if any of you are interested, we could still watch it together :D )
  • watched ‘300′, and a gazillion other titles. (same goes with this)
  • booked tickets to see Cirque du Soleil
  • done my accounting.
  • drank in awhile.
  • eaten a Krispy Kreme donut in awhile.
  • updated my other blog for awhile.
  • yet arranged another meeting with my supervisor.
  • gotten to know most in class better.
  • learnt to use endnote.
  • called home.

so little time, so much to do , so much more to get done.

I think Adrian’s tasks each week is helping us, me in particular, with planning the monster of a project we’re all supposed to be working on. There is this certain assurance after we go through that planning that the workload wouldn’t seem so daunting. This is the latest installment, a breaking down of tasks into smaller tasks, and how much I actually like/dread doing them.

Thesis Rating chart

Looks a hell lot like a rollercoaster ride. Should be fun! :)

Wordlist

Memorable
Well, while I can go on and stick a T& C right at the bottom that says the words on the list doesn’t come in order of importance, I guess I can’t deny that the words appear in the order they hit my head and memorable, to me, seems pretty important. I don’t expect people to go quoting me anytime soon(or at all), I do expect the readers of my thesis to remember that they have read this certain piece of work and that they will hopefully remember it.

Impressive
We have all been reading, most of our lives; be it some academic works or random books that we read in our spare time for just entertainment purposes. I want my work to impress the reader, once again, not top of the mind but at least when they are done with it they would go “Hey, that was pretty good/amazing/briiliant etc.(the list can go on and on :P )”

Focused
A 12,000 worded piece isn’t an easy read. And it certainly is far from being an easy job trying to get it written. As honours students we work on our projects/thesis for about 9 months (I figured from now till about November), we tend to lose ur focus, drift off a little. I certainly don’t want that to happen.

Critical
As mentioned above, a 12k piece of work can be focused but if it doesn’t cause some kind of critical thinking and stringing up of ideas from what I propose, I don’t think it’s good enough.

Thorough
Strong as some arguments might seem, they tend to fall flat if u would just look deep enough. My thesis would hopefully be looking deep enough and be totally aware of the many pitholes that might be present to bring through what I want it to say. Without falling apart.

Thought-provoking
I think this is kind of like the “critical” characteristic mentioned above but the difference is in its ability to allow the readers to relate and apply it to other films that they have seen before or after reading my thesis.

In-depth(Deep)
Ah, what’s the difference between “thorough” and “deep”, I heard you say. Well, to be honest, I was thinking deep as in the meanings and concepts I suggest, and “thorough” was more like how deep I dig in terms of research.

Analytical
The ability to sieve out what is important and also to spot trends? My thesis should take that “HUGE” amount of research that I would (hopefully) have done, and make good use of whatever information I pick up from there.

Enlightening
I want to be telling people something new. Not something that they already know and can think of if they put in more time thinking about it. It’s probably coming hand-in-hand with the “Impressive” part. Oh well.

Intense
Intense, in this sense, should not be taken as something hard to read. Intense should be the ability my thesis hopefully have to hang on to my readers from start to finish and not have them put it down after a chapter and go “hey, that was <all of the above> but I guess I could come back to it, soon.” Soon might be never.

Conclusive
Ultimately, I want to be giving them a conclusion, an answer to something. I guess that is my definition of a piece of work being finished. I don’t want to be just hitting word count, and using up all my research, covering all grounds and yet not give an answer to something.

Engaging
Okay, “Intensely-engaging” might be better.

Refreshing
New! Like lemon and stuff! I want to be saying something new from a new perspective. The added quality in this as compared to enlightening is that I would probably want people to come of it saying, “Hey I didn’t know that could be how I look at it.” which brings me to…

Logical
This comes in together with “refreshing”. While bringing in so much information and idea, all that need to come together and MAKE SENSE.

Flowing
This is partly a reminder. I am not a fantastic writer so I just need to make sure my arguments and writing flows and not have my audience read and wonder where the current part come in with the previous. NO CHUNKS!

– okay, i think i have repeated myself a tad here and there but i think i have covered most grounds about what i want my thesis to “feel” like. lemme know what you think.

While I have tried my hand at building websites, I have ended with mere webpages and nothing much more than a fully original layout on blogspot. I guess my inadequate web-building skills forced my hand and I have to make sure the background and visuals are better to make up for my almost non-existent html/coding skills. So here it is, a full on plan in order to do a nice webpage for my proposed online documentary.

Transient Spaces Website structure

On the other hand, back to Photoshop, this left me breathless, and skeptical about how good the models actually look.

hmmm it’s deeper than you think, just watch on. and have a good laugh, of course.

The working 4-sentence abstract (for use on the thesis)→Problem
→Why is it a problem?
→Startling sentence
→Implications of the sentence

The cultures portrayed in films are lost in translation when the big Hollywood studios buy the rights and remake these movies.
Consequences of misrepresentation of cultures might result in largely inaccurate understanding of these cultures by the global audience whose main source of knowledge comes from these Western remakes of films. This is the risk that most Hollywood studios have to undertake, to risk portraying to the large audience mass inaccurate depictions of cultures.
In this proposed thesis, I hope to take a deeper look into the stories and scripts that have since moved across the Pacific – remodeled/compromised, to allow a greater general understanding, via the recent Academy Award winning film, The Departed and the original Hong Kong film it was made from – Infernal Affairs.

There is a growing trend of Hollywood studios bringing in scripts and stories from the Hong Kong cinema and how the translation of culture is taking place as these studios look to remake the films while losing bits and pieces of the aforementioned culture.

- note the removal of “strong” words such as inaccurate and incorrect, and the introduction of the possibility that my perception might be wrong.

other than that, I should be looking at further refining it for a bit more, tweaking it a bit more. Shouldn’t be that far off yes?
